Walking the Road Together: A Year With An Overseed Spouse Cohort
My Overseed story is one of a simple monthly gathering that quietly grew into a community of friendships. Each month, a small group of pastors’ wives met at a church in downtown Boston—sometimes four of us, sometimes seven—coming from different congregations, neighborhoods, and ministry contexts across the city. Over time, the rhythm of being together became something we treasured. Sharing dinner before each session created space for trust to take root, and our conversations soon moved beyond life updates.
As we worked through the discussion material, we found ourselves naming the deeper realities of life in ministry—the burdens that often feel too heavy or too sensitive to carry publicly. We spoke honestly about crises within churches, disappointments, and the quiet ache of watching our husbands navigate uncertainty, criticism, or exhaustion. Those evenings became a place where the weight we carried privately was finally met with understanding, prayer, and steady companionship.
And the year was also full of joy. We celebrated new church callings, rejoiced with a family welcoming newly adopted children, and encouraged one another through the everyday work of caring for families while serving in ministry. We shared practical wisdom and reflected on the unique challenges of serving in a city marked by constant transition. One highlight was walking through a personality and gifting exercise together, which gave us a method to see how God has uniquely designed each of us to serve—not out of pressure or obligation, but with joy and freedom.
We also spent time considering our missional marriages. For some, certain seasons felt like a visible partnership—husband and wife serving side by side. For others, support happened quietly behind the scenes. Those conversations brought freedom: there is no single model for being a pastor’s wife. What mattered most was learning to walk in Christ together, caring for our marriages and families while seeking to glorify God in our circumstances.
Month by month, God met us in ordinary dinners, honest conversations, shared understanding, and prayer—threads that, woven together, created something strong and sustaining. We saw each other and remembered that we are not walking this road alone.
